Education

Education has always been a cornerstone of Seven Days’ mission. This year – as every year – we are engaging a number of artists for master-classes that will benefit our students in the arts. Students of dance will learn first-hand from Suzanne Farrell, Monica Bill Barnes and ZviDance; students of FSU’s acclaimed writing program can get pointers from Pulitzer-Prize-winning author Jennifer Egan; students in FSU’s remarkable College of Music can talk jazz with Christian McBride, world music with Zakir Hussain, and classical with the Ahn Trio; Theater students can learn from the National Theatre of Scotland; and students in FSU’s award-winning Film School can learn about the universe of independent film from one of its true oracles, Geoffrey Gilmore.

The big news for Seven Days and education in 2012 is the giant leap forward we’re taking with our K-12 program. Rather than staging a single performance (or not) for these students, Seven Days is offering seven different educational arts opportunities for Leon County Schools K-12. These include performances in FSU venues and in the schools.

This year, we are deeply excited to offer young people the chance to experience the following:

  • The Soweto Gospel Choir (world music)
  • The Ahn Trio (modern classical music)
  • National Theatre of Scotland (theater)
  • The Carolina Chocolate Drops (Appalachian music)
  • ZviDance (dance)
  • “Thread of Life” & “Splendid Treasures of the Turkomen” (fine art)
  • FSU Faculty Jazz Band (jazz)

In addition, students can once again contribute to this year’s Seven Days Mural (location TBD). Like last year’s arts mural at the corner of Gaines Street and Railroad Avenue, this year’s mural will be created in a public place during the course of the festival, with lots of community and student contributions.
