Marcus Roberts Septet:
Deep In The Shed
7 & 9:30 PM | TCC TURNER AUDITORIUM
PURCHASE TICKETSA regular at Seven Days, jazz giant Marcus Roberts presents yet another spectacular program, this one a reinvention of his longform jazz-blues suite Deep in the Shed, which has received rave reviews in New York and Chicago, the only two places it's been performed…until now.
Roberts has enlisted his regular trio mates (bassist Roland Guerin and drummer extraordinaire Jason Marsalis) and augmented the lineup with a who's-who of young jazz horn players: Marcus Printup (trumpet), Ronald Westray (trombone), Wessell Anderson (alto sax) and Stephen Riley (tenor sax). The piece is more evidence that "Roberts is clearly at an artistic peak in his career" (Jazz Times).
Upon its release in 1989, The New York Times called Deep in the Shed, "the most important jazz album of the last 10 years." In the intervening 20 years, Roberts released numerous CDs that topped the jazz charts, played as a solo artist and with symphony orchestras, developed one of the top jazz trios of our time, and devoted a great deal of his time to teaching, particularly at Florida State University, where he is on faculty at the College of Music. His reputation as one of the finest jazz musicians in the world has grown, and the music has only gotten stronger.
"The performance (of Deep in the Shed) attested not only to the enduring value of the original score, but also to the dramatic advances Roberts has made as a composer and bandleader," offered The Chicago Tribune. "This new version pointed to an artist who has established a voice entirely his own."
