Allen Toussaint and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
February 17, 2012 | 8pm
Ruby Diamond Concert Hall
“When I meet someone like Allen Toussaint - that for me is like meeting...the Dalai Lama because he’s a historical part of rock and roll.” - Elton John
New Orleans past, present and future all hit the stage for the dynamic, can’t-miss spectacular.
Allen Toussaint is a legendary American musician, songwriter and producer. In a career rich enough for at least four people, Toussaint has produced, written for, arranged, had his songs covered by, and performed with music giants Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle, Dr. John, The Band, The Rolling Stones, Devo, Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas, and countless others. No one was surprised when Allen Toussaint was elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews is that rare artist who earns the respect of both jazz legends and rock stars. Wynton Marsalis says “Shorty possesses the rarest combination of talent, technical capability and down-home soul. I’m his biggest fan,” while Lenny Kravitz calls him “A genius player…nothing but personality, he plays his ass off, and he’s a beautiful human being.” A band leader by age 6, earning a living at age 12, Andrews burst into international consciousness with Orleans Avenue and its blend of high-octane “SupaFunkRock” music. No less an authority on New Orleans music than Allen Toussaint said, “Don’t get me wrong, we got it goin’s on in New Orleans. (Trombone Shorty)’s just better".
